Before the Grateful Dead, even before the Warlocks, there was Mother' McCree's Uptown Jug Champions.  Only one known recording exists of this ragtag group that consisted of a young Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, and Pigpen McKernan, which was made at a Stanford University coffee house (Top of the Tangent) in July of 1964.  The recordings were released by the Grateful Dead after being unearthed back in 1999.

By May of 1965, Mother McCree had morphed into The Warlocks, and by the end of '65, the Grateful Dead.
